Desert Retreat

Bringing the outdoors in.

In the desert near Palm Springs, this weekend home was a place to stay—but that was about it. This LA-based couple wanted an inspiring getaway that suited their creative lifestyle—and had room for guests. Initially they considered building a guest house. Be we took one look and determined that they had plenty of room in the home—it just needed to be reconceived.
By reworking an underutilized portion of the house, we were able to give them a guest bedroom and bathroom, and a new art/yoga studio with a wall of windows and unobstructed desert views. Then, we fine-tuned a new hallway connecting all these spaces to create a stunning site line through the entire house and out to the desert. This hallway makes for a dramatic procession and makes the house feel twice as big. With our involvement, the owners spent a fraction of the cost of a guest house—and got everything they wanted, and more.
